Kashmir’s Tourism: A Revival,But Fragile

Kashmir’s Tourism: A Revival,But Fragile For decades, tourism has been rightly called a backbone of Kashmir’s economy,a source of livelihoods, culture, and hope for many families across the Valley. Recently, after years of struggle, there has been a noticeable revival: in 2024, the valley saw an all-time high influx, with around 3.5 million visitors arriving.  More broadly, the entire union territory of Jammu and Kashmir recorded a steep rise in domestic tourist visits, from about 25.19 lakh in 2020 to over 2.35 crore in 2024.  International tourism also showed signs of rebound: foreign tourist arrivals increased from a mere 1,650 in 2021 to tens of thousands in 2024.  According to the most recent data, the first half of 2025 alone saw over 95 lakh domestic visits and roughly 19,570 foreign tourist visits, a signal that confidence was returning to the ground.  After a steep dip over the past decade, tourism in Kashmir seemed to be bouncing back, both in numbers...

Kashmir's Silent Genocide

Kashmir’s Silent Genocide: When Pharmacies Become Drug Dens In the shadow of snow-capped mountains and the fragrance of blooming almond trees, a quiet war is claiming the soul of Kashmir. It’s not fought with guns or grenades  but with syrups, pills, and powders handed over across pharmacy counters without question, without prescriptions, and often without mercy. The very places meant to heal are now hubs of harm. In Kashmir, pharmacies are becoming drug dens  and the result is nothing short of a silent genocide. A New Enemy: Addiction For decades, the people of Kashmir have endured violence, political instability, and economic hardship. But today, a new enemy lurks within one that doesn’t make headlines or draw global attention. Drug addiction has become one of the most pressing and dangerous crises facing our society. This isn’t about recreational use or isolated abuse. This is an epidemic. Our youth the future of Kashmir are falling prey to pharmaceuticals that should...

When We Fight with Nature

When We Fight with Nature In our quest for progress, we have often found ourselves at odds with the very force that sustains life: nature. From rapid urbanization and deforestation to excessive pollution and climate change, humanity’s ongoing conflict with the natural world is becoming increasingly evident—and costly. The Illusion of Control Human beings have long believed they can conquer nature, bending it to their will. Skyscrapers rise where forests once stood, rivers are diverted to suit agricultural needs, and mountains are mined for their riches. For a while, this illusion of control seems to work. Crops flourish, cities expand, and industries boom. But beneath the surface, nature is quietly taking note. Nature Strikes Back Nature does not take revenge—but it does respond. When forests are cleared, rainfall patterns shift, leading to droughts or floods. When oceans are choked with plastic and oil, marine life suffers, and food chains collapse. When greenhouse gases blanke...
